Demon Dolan Ciar exists on three simple words desire, denial, and destruction. Every four years, he is allowed one night of earthly passion to punish a deserving female. By the time he is finished, his victims are left as willing receptacles for demons yet to come. Since she was four, a demon has been the only constant in Leora Desmond's life. He taught her how to seize control, to never give up, and to take whatever she wanted. At twenty-four, her self-centered existence is focused on one thing. She wants Dolan, and she won't be dissuaded. A mistake brought Dolan to Leora. A promise bound him to her. Returning once again to ask for his freedom, he is faced with Leora demanding to be his next conquest. The ultimate retribution would be to take from her the ultimate symbol of her selfishness. Now, Dolan must decide if he can doom her to life in living hell or face his own set of unearthly consequences, while Leora must choose between her pleasure and her heart. The Promise blurs the line between good and evil, desire and love, and promises and commitment.

Although this is only 56 Amazon pages in length, the fact that it only deals with the two main characters in four year snapshots makes it feel like the main characters got more development than many longer books I've read. If you don't normally like novellas you might give this one a go. It felt more complete than any of the others I've read and had a satisfying ending. I didn't feel like anything was cut off too soon, it felt like it ended right where it should (another issue I've had with previous novellas.)The first thing that attracted me to try this book was the intriguing intro. I'm a sucker for a demon who isn't quite able to act like a proper demon. Although I knew what was going to happen at the end, it still was touching when it happened. It was definitely a pleasant surprise read.

The Promise Kim Carmichael 9781939769121 Books Reviews
The Promise was not what I expected at all. I didn't think I was going to enjoy it with the way it started off, but I must say it all worked out good. The characters meshed really well. Of course the fact that the hot guy was a demon made it SO much better.
Leora has only been able to count on one person in her life...well beside herself that is. She takes in his advice and uses it to make herself into the person he intends for her to be only... much, much more.
Dolan is a demon who is not suppose to care or feel for humans, but that changes the moment he walks into a little girls room and makes a promise he didn't intend to make. A promise that could get him into trouble but one that captures his heart.
"The Promise" was a good quick read. Dolan found Lenora in her bedroom one night. Intrigued by the human Dolan spent time with her and during that time she made him promise that he would always come to her every 4 years when he was allowed to return. Dolan had to keep his promise; he could never break a promise. He always appeared to Lenora every 4 years and he also gave her lessons along the way. As she learned the lessons he taught her, he never expected her to teach him a lesson. She would teach him to be selfless and that lesson would lead Dolan to something he has never seen or experienced before; light and love. I wish it was longer but it is definitely worth reading. I would love to read more of Dolan and Lenora's story but this novella does leave you with a great ending.
The Promise is a fast read that I accomplished in a few hours that I thoroughly enjoyed!! Unlike other books of Kim's that I have read, this has a bit of a Paranormal element in it and I found it to be an captivating read.
Each chapter is titled and set 4 years apart. The first chapter is of their initial meet and how Dolan made the Promise to return to see Leona every four years that he returns to earth. He is able to see the drastic changes in Leona each time he returns and how she grows into a beautiful woman.
I enjoyed the journey that the two characters had. How two different beings were able to find one constant every four years that slowly bought them together. When they get together, as it is inevitable that they will, they come together with a BANG!! And boy was it Hawt and steamy!! Another fabulous read Kim!!

This is a story about a Man named Dolan who is not human and break a women's heart every 4 human years. He is on a mission when he is faced at a house with a little girl named Leora she has just lost her mother and he cant stand to see her cry...that is when he reveals himself to her. She makes him promise he will always come back every 4 years to see her to get her to stop crying he agrees. Even though he is a demon he can not break a promise no matter what. He can not believe he has done this and is going to pay dearly for this. Every 4 years he returns to her and tries to get her to release him from his promise he has seen so many years of her life go by and just wants to move on. There are so many emotions he has never felt before and has no idea how to handle certain situations. He begs and pleads to be released only to be told "Your are mine" every time. Will he give in and give Leora what she wants? Will he keep trying to break him promise to her?
Well from reading the Summary, and reading what other's wrote I was expecting a hot, hot erotica. But for the first 65% of the book there wasn't so much as more than a chaste peck on the check. Now mind you this book is short. It literally took me about thirty minutes to read.
The characters are not very well developed but that is to be expected in a short. Leora wasn't really any sort of character that I can describe. And Nolan was a piss poor example of a demon for the majority of the book. But we can forgive him for this because he started out with a 4 year old. The book does major time jumps, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 are the ages we deal with for Leora, meanwhile Nolan doesn't age at all.
So since this is an erotica I suppose that I should comment on the erotic portion of the book. As someone who has a decent love life I can say that there was nothing out of the ordinary. In fact I don't really understand why this is even classified as an erotica. I didn't think that the sex scenes were that graphic or for that matter over the top in any way.
Was this a decent story? Yes, if it was longer it probably would have turned out to be quite entertaining. All in call it was a quick read which had a decent love scene. I actually liked Nolan a lot in the book, even though he was a demon.
I would love to give this book more stars, but it just didn't do it for me. I am therefore giving it 3.5 stars and would say give it a read it's a quick story and who knows you may just like it. For me it just didn't hit that read me again and again point.
